Views of Summer (50mm)

Looking at the last warms day of summer through a 50 mm lens

On one of the last blazing hot days in August I decide to spend the day walking from Brooklyn to Manhattan. During this venture I also decided to on using my 50 mm to capture the day. Since it isn’t my usually lens of choice in street photography I play around with it to see if it changes the way I observe things.

I started by exploring under the Nassau J/M/Z train line just walking under the elevated train tracks. Walking through the neighborhood I found myself looking at the patterns of light and shadows that become prominent in the high noon sun. Normally my focus is closer and more intimate, with my lens of the day I was able to capture more in the street scenes to get a sense of places along with the people in it.

On further walking I ended up in Williamsburg going over the bridge enjoy the day seeing such a vibrant and interesting ongoing‘s of the day to day. Colorful city backdrops and moments were plentiful in the area. But as I moved around Seeing not only people in the day to day but also the city from such a wonderful over head view street brought me a sense of calm and peace on such a scorching hot day. I felt like the entire city was mine for a moment, seeing the river stretch out past the bridges in the distance.

As I got into Manhattan the evening was setting in and the direction of light changed as the my focus on my subject matter. I moved closer towards the people I choose to photograph and let there individual stories fill the frame. This gave a highlight of each person character and individuality, with the goal in mind the capture the person as they are in that moment.

Overall I think changing up the lens from time to time helped out in a lot of ways and will continue to be something I practice going forward.
